The Skate Garden concept is the result of outreach going back to 2009. We have been asking, "What would you like?" The answers were consistent, half of the skaters wanted a skate plaza, the other half wanted bowls and transition. We also got a lot of comments on making it an approachable space that is comfortable for families and safe for onlookers. An appropriately sized skatepark for Carp would only need around 10,000 sf, or about 1/3 of the 30,000 sf property. The City had some interest in creating a community garden so the idea to bring these uses together in an unprecedented way was born. The other 2/3 of the property could be split between garden space and public open space. Also taken into consideration was the proximity to residential properties in which we designed the shape of the park to be long and narrow and tucked up against the railroad allowing the garden and open space to become a sound buffer. |
